Behind every successful leader is a network of trusted advisors, champions, and advocates who offer guidance, open doors, challenge assumptions, and create opportunities. In this Lean In Circle, we'll explore the concept of your Personal Board of Directors, the people who influence your growth both professionally and personally. Together, we'll discuss the distinct roles these relationships play, including mentors who provide wisdom and advocates who champion you when you're not in the room.

Behind every successful leader is a network of trusted advisors, champions, and advocates who provide guidance, challenge assumptions, open doors, and create opportunities that might not have been possible otherwise. While we often think of career growth as a result of hard work and technical expertise, the relationships we intentionally cultivate can have an equally profound impact on our success. In this Lean In Circle, we'll explore the concept of your Personal Board of Directors, the people who influence your growth both professionally and personally. We'll discuss the different roles these relationships play, including mentors who share wisdom, sponsors who advocate for you when you're not in the room, coaches who help you develop new skills, and connectors who expand your network and introduce new opportunities. Together, we'll reflect on who currently serves on our boards, identify where there may be gaps, and discuss how to build meaningful, authentic relationships that support long-term career growth. We'll also consider an often-overlooked question: Whose board are you serving on? Leadership isn't only about receiving guidance, it's also about investing in others and creating opportunities for those coming behind us. Participants will complete a Personal Board of Directors exercise to map their current network, recognize areas of strength, and identify one relationship they will intentionally cultivate over the next six months. Through facilitated discussion and shared experiences, we'll exchange practical ideas for seeking mentorship, earning sponsorship, expanding professional networks, and becoming stronger advocates for one another. Whether you're just beginning your career, stepping into leadership, or navigating your next chapter, this session will provide a thoughtful framework for building the relationships that help careers, and people, thrive.
